6 Days Tour from Marrakech: Sahara Desert & Atlas Mountains Journey

A private 6 day tour from Marrakech through the High Atlas, the Sahara dunes at Merzouga, and on to Fes. Run by Morocco Fun Tours since 2015.

From $700 per person (based on double occupancy) · 6 days, 5 nights · Private tour, never shared with strangers · Starts in Marrakech, ends in Fes

Is a 6 Days Tour from Marrakech to Fes Enough to See Marrakech and the Sahara?

Traveler enjoying a camel ride across the golden Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga with a local guide at sunset.

Yes. This 6-day tour turns a long transfer into a real journey: two days crossing the Atlas Mountains, one night in the Sahara at Merzouga, two days in Fes, then a return to Marrakech. A direct Marrakech-to-Merzouga drive alone takes 9 to 10 hours over 560 kilometers. Spreading that across six days means the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Benhaddou, and the Dades Gorge become part of the experience, not something to endure.

If you only have 6 days and want to stay inside Marrakech, that is also plenty of time for the medina, the gardens, and a day trip or two. But that plan leaves the Sahara out entirely. This tour is built for travelers who want both: a real introduction to Marrakech, then a proper journey through the mountains and dunes, with a different road home so you are not retracing the same route twice.

Meet Bakabbou Youssef, Your Driver Guide in Morocco

Bakabou  Youssef has run this exact route for more than 10 years. He grew up in the Ouarzazate region, on the road this tour follows, and started guiding travelers through the Atlas and the Sahara in 2015. He speaks English, French, Spanish, and personally trains every driver-guide who works with Morocco Fun Tours.

4, 5, 6, or 7 Days: Which Length Fits Your Trip?

Travelers often compare this 6-day route against shorter and longer versions before booking. Here is an honest breakdown of what each length actually gets you.

Length Distance Typical Drive Time
Marrakech to Merzouga and back, same mountain road both ways, no Fes
Travelers who only want the desert
Same loop as this tour, but with one less exploration day in Fes
Travelers on a tighter schedule who still want Fes included
6 Days
This tour: full Atlas crossing, one desert night, two full days in Fes, then back to Marrakech by a different road
Most first-time visitors combining Marrakech, the Sahara, and Fes
7 Days
This same loop with a Chefchaouen detour added after Fes
Travelers who also want the Blue City and have an extra day to spare

A 4-day version means driving the same mountain road twice, once each direction, with no time in Fes. This 6-day tour still returns to Marrakech, but the return leg takes a different, more direct road than the outbound mountain route. If Chefchaouen matters to you, 7 days fits it in properly instead of rushing it onto the end of day 6.

Tour Highlights For 6 Days Tour From Marrakech

  • Cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass, the highest paved mountain road in Morocco at 2,260 meters
  • Walk through Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage kasbah used in Gladiator and Game of Thrones
  • Sleep one night in a desert camp at the base of the Erg Chebbi dunes
  • Ride a camel into the Sahara for sunset, led by a local Berber guide
  • Drive the Dades and Todra Gorges, two of the most dramatic canyon roads in North Africa
  • Visit Khamlia, a small village known for its Gnawa music tradition
  • Arrive in Fes with two full days to explore the largest car-free urban area in the world
  • Return to Marrakech on a different road than you came, with fuel and pickup and drop-off included

Berber Culture Along This Route

Much of southern Morocco is Amazigh, often called Berber, the indigenous people of North Africa who lived here long before Arabic became the region's main language. You will hear Tamazight spoken in villages between Ouarzazate and Merzouga, alongside Arabic and French.

The desert camp on Day 2 is run by a Berber family, not a hotel chain. The music around the fire that night is a local tradition, not a staged show. In Khamlia on Day 3, the Gnawa music you hear traces back to communities that settled in southern Morocco generations ago, distinct from Amazigh tradition but part of the same region's layered history. Understanding this mix, Amazigh, Arab, and Gnawa, makes the drive between cities feel less like transit and more like the trip itself.

6 Days Tour from Marrakech to Fes Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou and Dades Gorge

Ait Ben Haddou, a historic mud-brick fortified village and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Morocco

Your driver-guide picks you up from your Marrakech riad or hotel at 8:00 AM. The first stretch climbs into the High Atlas Mountains toward the Tizi n’Tichka pass. On a clear day you can see the Toubkal range from the summit. We stop here for photos and a short break.

From the pass, the road drops toward Ait Benhaddou, a fortified village built from red clay and straw. It has stood since at least the 17th century and is one of the best-preserved examples of Southern Moroccan earthen architecture still standing. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage list in 1987. You get a full hour here, not a photo stop from the road. That is enough time to cross the river and walk through the kasbah itself.

After lunch in Ouarzazate, sometimes called the gateway to the Sahara because of its film studios, the route continues past the Skoura palm oasis and the Valley of Roses near Kelaat M’Gouna. If you are traveling in early May, this valley is in bloom and worth the extra 20 minutes it adds to the drive.

Overnight in a kasbah-style hotel in the Dades Gorge, with dinner included.

Includes

Private transport, driver-guide, Tizi n’Tichka stop, Ait Benhaddou visit, dinner and breakfast, 1 night accommodation.

Optional

Ait Benhaddou local guide (recommended, paid on site), Ouarzazate film studio tour.

Day 2: Dades Gorge to Merzouga Sahara

This is the day most travelers remember longest. The road runs through the Dades Gorge first, then the Todra Gorge, where limestone cliffs rise nearly 300 meters on both sides of the road. We stop at both.

Past Tinghir, the landscape changes fast. Palm groves give way to flat gravel plains, then to the first dunes near Erfoud, a town known for its fossil workshops. By late afternoon you reach Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune field.

You leave the vehicle behind here. A 4×4 or camel takes you the rest of the way into the dunes, depending on which accommodation option you choose. Your bags travel separately by 4×4 either way, so you are not carrying luggage on the camel ride.

The camel trek to camp takes about 90 minutes and times itself to arrive before sunset. If you would rather not ride, a 4×4 transfer is available at no extra cost, and this is worth knowing before you book, not after.

Dinner at camp is cooked by the same Berber families who run it, usually a chicken or vegetable tagine. Afterward, expect drumming around the fire. There is no wifi or phone signal here. Most travelers we have guided say that is the best part of the night, not a drawback.

Includes

Dades and Todra Gorge stops, camel trek or 4×4 transfer to camp, 1 night desert camp, dinner and breakfast.

Optional

Sandboarding, quad biking near camp, private upgrade to a luxury tent with an ensuite bathroom.

Day 3: Sunrise Over the Dunes to Khamlia and Ziz Valley

Sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes with Morocco Fun Tours

Camp staff wake guests early for a second camel ride, out into the dunes to watch the sunrise. It is a quiet, slow ride, timed so you are seated in the sand as the light changes. If you would rather walk instead of riding again, tell camp staff the night before and they will point you to the nearest dune, about a 20 minute climb.

After breakfast, we visit Khamlia, a small village south of Merzouga known for Gnawa music, a tradition brought north by sub-Saharan communities generations ago. A short live performance is usually included if the musicians are available that morning.

From Merzouga, the road follows the Ziz Valley, a long corridor of palm groves cut by the Ziz River, then climbs toward the cedar forests around Ifrane. Ifrane looks unlike anywhere else in Morocco, with sloped roofs and pine trees, and sits at over 1,600 meters.

Overnight in Fes, arriving in the late afternoon.

Includes

Sunrise camel ride, Khamlia village visit, Ziz Valley and Ifrane stops, transport to Fes, breakfast.

Optional

Extended Gnawa music session, Ifrane lunch stop with local specialties.

Day 4 to 5: Fes, the Cultural Capital

Fes el-Bali, the old walled city, is the largest car-free urban area in the world. A local guide is genuinely useful here, not just a suggestion. The medina has over 9,000 narrow streets, and even residents sometimes need directions.

Highlights include the Chouara Tannery, where leather has been dyed by hand since the 11th century, the Al-Attarine Madrasa, and the Bou Inania Madrasa. Fes was one of Morocco’s four imperial cities, and it shows in the density of historic sites packed into a small area.

You will have a full second day to explore at your own pace, whether that means more of the medina, the Jewish quarter in the Mellah, or simply slower mornings after five days of driving.

Panoramic view of the historic Fes Medina with a traditional minaret at sunset

Includes

2 nights accommodation, breakfast, guided medina walk on arrival day.

Optional

Private full-day Fes guide, cooking class, hammam spa visit.

Day 6: Fes back to Marrakech

Barbary macaque crossing a mountain road in the Middle Atlas with Morocco Fun Tours

The return leg does not retrace Days 1 to 3. Instead, your driver-guide takes a more direct road through Khenifra and Beni Mellal, about 480 kilometers and 7 hours, with stops for lunch and rest along the way.

If you would rather skip the second long drive, a domestic flight from Fes to Marrakech takes about an hour and can be arranged as a paid upgrade. Ask about this option when you book if a shorter travel day matters to you.

Drop-off is at your Marrakech riad or hotel, or the airport if your flight departs that evening. If you are continuing to Chefchaouen, Rabat, or Casablanca instead of returning to Marrakech, we can arrange that separately. See our related private tours below for multi-city extensions.

Includes

Private transport back to Marrakech, driver-guide, drop-off at your hotel or the airport.

Optional

Domestic flight upgrade from Fes to Marrakech (additional cost), extra stop in Beni Mellal.

Other Landmarks and Towns Along the Way

This route passes several places worth knowing about, even if they are not full stops on the itinerary.

  • Telouet Kasbah, a former Glaoui family stronghold near the Tizi n’Tichka pass, reachable as a short detour on Day 1 for travelers who want to see a second kasbah beyond Ait Benhaddou
  • Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river valley, visible in sections between Ouarzazate and the desert, lined with palm groves and old ksour
  • Boumalne Dades, the town at the entrance to the Dades Gorge, a common lunch stop
  • Tinghir, the palm oasis town between the Dades and Todra Gorges
  • Rissani, a market town near Merzouga known for its Sunday souk and as the ancestral home of Morocco’s royal Alaouite dynasty
  • Toubkal National Park, home to North Africa’s highest peak, visible from the Tizi n’Tichka viewpoint on a clear day
  • Meknes and Volubilis, an imperial city and a Roman ruin site north of Fes, both possible as an add-on day for travelers extending their trip

Where You'll Stay

Comfort Option

Family-run kasbah hotels and a shared-bathroom desert camp. Clean, simple, and well reviewed by past travelers.

Premium Option

Riad-style hotels with private ensuite bathrooms throughout, including a private-bathroom desert tent.

Luxury Option

4 and 5-star properties in Fes, plus an upgraded luxury camp with real beds, private bathrooms, and hot showers under canvas.

If a private bathroom in the desert matters to you, say so when booking. Not every tent has one, and this is worth confirming in advance rather than finding out at check-in.

Wifi, Water, Power, and Medical Access on This Route

These are the small, practical questions travelers ask us most, and they deserve straight answers.

  • Internet: Hotels in Marrakech and Fes have working wifi. The Dades Gorge hotel usually does too, though speeds vary. The desert camp has no wifi and no phone signal. Buy a local SIM card in Marrakech if you need to stay reachable for part of the trip.
  • Bathrooms: Every hotel night has a private ensuite bathroom. The desert camp depends on your accommodation tier: Comfort tents share a bathroom block, Premium and Luxury tents have a private ensuite.
  • Power sockets: Standard European two-pin sockets (Type C and E) throughout. Bring an adapter if you are traveling from the UK, US, or elsewhere. The desert camp has limited charging points powered by generator or solar, available in the communal area, not always inside each tent.
  • Drinking water: Bottled water is provided during transport and at meals. Do not drink tap water anywhere on this route, including in hotels.
  • Medical access: Pharmacies are common in Marrakech, Ouarzazate, and Fes. Between Dades Gorge and Merzouga, the nearest clinics are in Tinghir and Erfoud. Your driver-guide carries a basic first aid kit and knows the nearest medical point at every stage of the route. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for any Morocco trip that includes the desert.

Meeting Point, Pickup, and Accessibility

Pickup is from your Marrakech riad or hotel between 7:30 and 8:00 AM on Day 1. Airport pickup can be arranged the night before if you are arriving that morning.

This tour involves walking on uneven ground at Ait Benhaddou, in the desert camp, and in the Fes medina, where vehicles cannot enter. It is not wheelchair accessible in its current form. If you have mobility concerns, contact us before booking and we will tell you honestly whether this route will work for you.

Drop-off on Day 6 is back at your Marrakech riad or hotel, or the airport if you are flying out that evening.

Price depends on group size and season. It never depends on how long you negotiate, and it never changes once you have booked. You can book this tour online through our website, by WhatsApp, or by email. A reputable operator will always show you a real itinerary and a real price before asking for a deposit. If a company will not give you either in writing, that is worth treating as a warning sign.

How to Book This Tour

Booking takes three steps. Choose your accommodation tier and dates above, send your group size and any dietary or accessibility needs, then confirm with a deposit. You will receive a written itinerary and receipt before you pay anything. If an operator asks for full payment upfront with no written confirmation, treat that as a reason to look elsewhere.

Cancellation Policy

Full refund for cancellations 7 or more days before departure. 50 percent refund for cancellations 3 to 6 days before. No refund inside 48 hours, since guides and camp space are booked specifically for your group.

Is Marrakech Safe at Night?

Yes, in the main tourist areas and Jemaa el-Fna, which stays busy and well lit until late. Use the same judgment you would in any large city. Stick to well-traveled streets after dark, agree on taxi fares before you get in, and keep valuables out of sight in crowded areas like the souks.

Know Before You Go: Extra Travel Tips

Weather and When to Go

October and November bring the most comfortable desert temperatures, with warm days and cool nights. March through May is nearly as good, with occasional spring wind. July and August push desert daytime highs past 40°C, and while the tour still runs, early starts matter more in summer. December and January bring cold desert nights, sometimes near freezing, so pack layers even if Marrakech feels mild.

What to Pack

Layers are the key, since mountain mornings, desert afternoons, and desert nights are three different climates in the same trip. Bring a warm layer for the Tizi n’Tichka pass and desert evenings, a scarf or hat for sun and sand, comfortable closed shoes for the dunes, and modest clothing for visiting mosque exteriors and rural villages.

Currency and Cash

The Moroccan dirham cannot be exchanged before you arrive. Change money at the airport or in the city, not through street vendors. Credit cards work in Fes and Marrakech hotels but rarely elsewhere on this route, so carry cash for lunches, tips, and small purchases.

Local Customs

A cup of mint tea offered by a host family is a genuine gesture of hospitality, not a sales pitch. Accepting it is polite. In the souks, a little bargaining is expected and part of the interaction, not a conflict. If you are not buying, a simple “la shukran,” meaning no thank you in Arabic, works better than English or French and ends the conversation faster.

Photography

Sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes and the Tizi n’Tichka viewpoint are the two strongest photo moments on this route. Ask before photographing people directly, especially in villages, and expect a small tip request in return if you do.

Entry Requirements

Most travelers from the UK, US, EU, and Canada can enter Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days. Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity remaining from your arrival date. Requirements can change, so confirm with your government’s official travel advisory before you fly.

Why Book With Morocco Fun Tours?

This tour is run by the same operator who guides it, not a booking platform reselling a generic minibus circuit. Some agencies in Marrakech sell the identical route under different names at different prices. Ask any operator directly whether your group will be combined with other bookings. With Morocco Fun Tours, the answer is always no.

Traveler Stories

Claire, UK

Claire booked this route for herself and her 65-year-old mother, worried the driving days would be too much for her. She asked us in advance about rest stops and toilet access along the way. The pace worked for both of them. Her mother’s favorite stop was Ait Benhaddou, slow enough to explore without feeling rushed, and Claire said the desert camp felt more comfortable than she expected going in.

Marco, Italy

Marco traveled alone and almost booked a group tour instead, worried a private tour would feel isolating. The communal dinner at the desert camp changed his mind. He ended up sharing the fire that night with travelers from three other countries, and said it was easier to meet people there than on the group tour he’d taken the year before in Spain.

Anna and Peter, Germany

This was Anna and Peter’s first trip to Africa, and they read every review they could find before booking, mostly worried about the desert camp’s bathroom situation and the mountain driving. What they found matched what we told them beforehand: a private ensuite tent, and a genuinely winding but well-maintained road over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Peter said the honesty of our answers before booking was what convinced them to go with us over two other operators.

Excellent Tour with Friendly guide A last-minute change, and yes! it was worth it!!!In the end, my friends, my sister, and I had to change our vacation plans, and through a friend, we met our dear guide Youssef in Ouarzazate, a magnificent city with its kasbahs and palm groves! Youssef made us feel at ease right away! He's a very cool person! The next day, we headed to DADES with a parade of extraordinary and soothing landscapes: the Dades Gorges valley and the Todra Gorges! Followed by a meeting with a nomadic family who kindly welcomed us with a glass of tea, explaining their way of life.Arriving at the gates of the desert in Merzouga, a change of scenery! Camel rides to our bivouac!, beautiful starry night, campfire with a wonderful staff and great atmosphere!!! We ended with a sublime sunrise!I thank Youssef immensely for his kindness, patience, generosity, and simplicity.

Moroccan Desert tour - A Must-Do Experience! If you come to Morocco, don't miss this incredible experience! In just three days, you'll witness breathtaking landscapes and unique cultures - from the High Atlas' red mountains to Berber villages, Todra Gorges, and a stunning dromedary ride in Merzouga desert. This tour packs a punch: 1000 km in three days, but it's totally worth it! The Deluxe desert camp is a highlight, offering a well-deserved treat after two days of travel. On the downside, our guide could've been more engaging, providing more insights beyond timings and WhatsApp updates. The car was comfy, though, making the nine-hour return trip manageable.Overall, an experience not to be missed

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Erg Chebbi the real Sahara Desert?

Yes. Erg Chebbi is part of the Sahara, though it sits at the desert’s northern edge. Travelers seeking deeper, less visited dunes sometimes continue further south to Erg Chegaga, but Erg Chebbi offers genuine Sahara dunes within a realistic 6-day timeframe.

Can I skip the camel ride?

Yes. A 4×4 transfer to camp is available at no extra charge. Tell your booking agent in advance so the camp is prepared.

Is this tour suitable for children or older travelers?

Yes. The vehicle stops frequently, and the pace is set by your group, not a fixed schedule. Let us know ages in advance so we can plan rest stops accordingly.

Do I need a 4x4 vehicle for this route?

No. The full route is on paved roads. A 4×4 is only used for the short stretch into the desert camp.

How much should I tip my driver-guide?

Around 100 to 150 dirhams per day is standard, paid directly at the end of the tour, not left with a third party.

What happens if I get travel sick on the mountain roads?

Ask for a front seat before Day 1. The Tizi n’Tichka and Dades Gorge sections have the most turns. Motion sickness medication taken before departure works better than after symptoms start.

Can this tour be customized?

Yes, within reason. Extra nights in Marrakech or Fes, a Chefchaouen extension, or a private guide upgrade in any city can all be added. Tell us what matters most to you and we will build around it.
